The U.S. Department of Justice Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) is showing its continued support for drug courts by announcing the solicitation for grant applications for drug courts for 2013. Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) Courts, Veterans Treatment Courts, Reentry Courts, and Tribal Healing to Wellness Courts are also eligible to receive funds for establishing courts or for the enhancement of their programs.

There are three types of grants that will be awarded:

  • The first, Implementation Grants, are available to courts that have already completed the planning phase and are ready to implement an evidence-based program.
  • The second, Enhancement Grants, are available for courts with a program already in operation.
  • The third, Statewide Grants, are awarded to improve or expand treatment court services by advocating for following evidence-based program designs, and to support treatment courts that have not already received BJA funding.

The application deadline is 11:59 p.m. EST on February 21, 2013, and applicants must first register with grants.gov. The full BJA solicitation can be found here. A webinar hosted by the National Drug Court Institute/National Association of Drug Court Professionals will be held January 8, 2013, at 2:00 p.m. EST to assist courts in completing their applications.

There are currently over 2,700 drug courts in operation in the U.S. with a proven track record of success. Be sure to check out these resources for more information.
