{"id":6030,"date":"2018-03-28T14:57:20","date_gmt":"2018-03-28T20:57:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.scramsystems.com\/blog\/?p=6030"},"modified":"2018-11-12T14:40:36","modified_gmt":"2018-11-12T21:40:36","slug":"self-reported-drunk-and-dangerous-driving-decreasing-survey-shows","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.scramsystems.com\/blog\/2018\/03\/self-reported-drunk-and-dangerous-driving-decreasing-survey-shows\/","title":{"rendered":"Self-Reported Drunk and Dangerous Driving Decreasing, Survey&#160;Shows"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Traffic Injury Research Foundation USA (TIRF) has released the <a href=\"http:\/\/tirf.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/RSM-TIRF-USA-2017-Alcohol-Impaired-Driving-in-the-United-States-6.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2017 results from their annual Road Safety Monitor<\/a>, a public opinion survey focusing on self-reported drunk and dangerous driving behaviors. TIRF is reporting a decrease of self-reported drunk driving since the survey\u2019s first release in 2015, suggesting that Americans are becoming more conscious of making dangerous driving decisions and of their alternative transportation options should they choose to&#160;drink.<\/p>\n<h2>Are Drivers Becoming More Aware of Dangerous&#160;Decisions?<\/h2>\n<p>Between 2015 and 2016, the poll results showed a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scramsystems.com\/blog\/2017\/02\/more-drivers-admit-to-driving-drunk-survey-shows\/\">substantial increase of Americans who admitted to driving drunk<\/a> in the last 12 months, from 8% to 11.7%, coinciding with an increased <a href=\"http:\/\/tirf.ca\/2017\/12\/19\/poll-people-get-behind-wheel-impaired-think-ok-drive\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rate of alcohol-involved traffic fatalities<\/a> in 2016. However, TIRF\u2019s 2017 data shows that 9.2% of U.S. drivers reported that they drove over the legal limit in the last 12 months, with 2.2% doing so \u201coften or very often\u201d\u2014a decrease from 5.5% in 2016 and 4% in&#160;2015.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, 2017 saw lower percentages in all categories of self-reported dangerous driving behaviors, including speeding, driving while tired or fatigued, and distracted&#160;driving.<\/p>\n<h2>Top Reported Reasons People Drive&#160;Impaired<\/h2>\n<p>The most commonly reported reasons people chose to drive when they thought they were above the legal limit remained relatively consistent with previous years\u2019&#160;results:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>48.6% of surveyed drivers stated they got behind the wheel while intoxicated because they \u201cthought they were OK to drive,\u201d a 4.9% increase from&#160;2016<\/li>\n<li>12.8% chose to drive impaired because they were \u201cnot very far away\u201d from their&#160;destination<\/li>\n<li>10.6% believed they \u201ccould drive&#160;carefully\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>However, the percentage of people that believed they \u201chad no alternative\u201d was almost cut in half at 4.7% (from 8.7% in 2016), suggesting that the use of transportation alternatives, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scramsystems.com\/blog\/2017\/10\/ride-sharing-services-affecting-drunk-driving-crashes\/\">such as ride-sharing services<\/a> like Uber and Lyft, is gaining popularity across the country. But, with almost half of surveyed drivers believing they were fine to drive after drinking indicates that more education on the dangers and consequences of this behavior may be&#160;needed.<\/p>\n<p>While a decrease in self-reported drunk driving is great news, one good year does not make a trend.
