A long, hot day of swimming, BBQs, and time with family and friends is capped off by fireworks and a late-night drive&#160;home.<\/p>\n<p>But these very celebrations also make our national holiday one of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/drivers-beware-fourth-of-july-most-dangerous-day-of-the-year\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">most dangerous times of the year<\/a> for roadway fatalities and alcohol-involved&#160;crashes.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.ny.aaa.com\/aaas-2015-independence-day-weekend-travel-forecast\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Millions of Americans will hit the road<\/a> for the Fourth of July, and high rates of drinking combined with more people on the road can lead to tragedy. According to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.trafficsafetymarketing.gov\/july4th\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHSTA)<\/a>, in 2014 alcohol was a factor in 41% of roadway fatalities during the July Fourth&#160;holiday.<\/p>\n<p>And even though data shows that there may be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scramsystems.com\/media-room\/a-monday-july-4th-may-lead-to-fewer-alcohol-problems\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">fewer alcohol incidents when\u00a0Independence Day\u00a0falls on a Monday<\/a>\u2014as it does this year\u2014officials still expect to see a significant increase in drunk driving and alcohol-involved crashes starting on Friday, July&#160;1.<\/p>\n<p>Here are a few tips to help you stay safe and make it to July&#160;5:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Alcohol and fireworks don\u2019t&#160;mix.<\/strong> If pyrotechnics are legal in your state and you plan to light up a few sparklers and roman candles, make sure the person in charge is&#160;sober.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Pace your&#160;drinking.<\/strong> Independence Day can be especially alcohol-fueled because many people start drinking early in the day and continue right up until the fireworks display. In addition, dehydration from July-level heat means alcohol can have an especially potent punch. Set a limit to the number of drinks you\u2019ll consume and alternate with non-alcohol&#160;beverages.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Drunk boating is as dangerous as drunk&#160;driving.<\/strong> Many people head to the lake to celebrate, but <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/features\/boatingsafety\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">according to the CDC<\/a>, nearly one-third of boating deaths are tied to alcohol. Most states have similar BAC limits for operating a boat and driving, so boat operators should hold off on the drinks until everyone is back on dry&#160;land.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Make plans for a sober ride home&#160;<em>before<\/em> the day\u2019s festivities&#160;start.<\/strong> Line up a designated driver, program a cab company\u2019s number into your phone, sign up for a service like Uber or Lyft, or arrange to stay the night before you take the first&#160;sip.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For many, Independence Day translates to the ultimate celebration of summer.
