Once again, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ntsb.gov\/safety\/mwl\/Pages\/mwl8-2016.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NTSB included substance-impaired driving<\/a> (drunk and drugged driving)\u00a0in its priorities. Despite our nation\u2019s concerted efforts to curb drunk driving, data indicate that one-third of highway deaths involve an alcohol-impaired driver\u2014a proportion that has remained largely unchanged for at least 15&#160;years.<\/p>\n<p>This year the agency highlighted the important role technology can play in reducing transportation deaths, including impaired-driving fatalities. The NTSB specifically noted the need for countermeasures that target repeat\u00a0DWI offenders, such as ignition interlocks and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scramsystems.com\/programs\/drunk-driving\/dui-courts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">specialty court programs that use a combination of treatment and supervision<\/a>, including alcohol monitoring&#160;technology.<\/p>\n<p>Also included in the NTSB\u2019s recommendations is a renewed call for states to <a href=\"http:\/\/scramsystems.com\/blog\/2015\/12\/u-s-supreme-court-to-look-at-penalties-for-refusing-bac-tests-during-dwi-stops\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reduce the legal BAC for drivers from 0.08 to 0.05<\/a>. Research shows that the risk of a fatal crash more than doubles by the time someone reaches the current drunk-driving limit, and lowering the standard would bring the U.S. in line with much of the rest of the world. However, the recommendation\u00a0didn&#8217;t gain much tangible\u00a0support\u00a0when the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2013\/05\/14\/us\/ntsb-blood-alcohol\/\">agency first suggested it in 2013<\/a>, and it remains to be seen what, if anything, will come of it this time&#160;around.<\/p>\n<p>The NTSB\u2019s full Most Wanted list covers all modes of transportation and includes the&#160;following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>End substance impairment in&#160;transportation<\/li>\n<li>Reduce fatigue-related&#160;accidents<\/li>\n<li>Promote availability of collision avoidance technologies in highway&#160;vehicles<\/li>\n<li>Disconnect from deadly&#160;distractions<\/li>\n<li>Promote completion of rail safety&#160;initiatives<\/li>\n<li>Require medical fitness for&#160;duty<\/li>\n<li>Improve rail transit safety&#160;oversight<\/li>\n<li>Strengthen occupant&#160;protection<\/li>\n<li>Prevent loss of control in flight in general&#160;aviation<\/li>\n<li>Enhance use of recorders to enhance transportation&#160;safety<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ntsb.gov\/safety\/mwl\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Click here to see the NTSB&#8217;s full recommendations on these items<\/a>.<\/p>\n<!-- Shortcode [san-joaquin-case-study] does not exist -->\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Earlier this month the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) announced its top ten Most Wanted List of transportation safety improvements for 2016.
