{"id":3928,"date":"2015-06-02T11:15:04","date_gmt":"2015-06-02T17:15:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/scramsystems.com\/blog\/?p=3928"},"modified":"2021-08-26T11:47:19","modified_gmt":"2021-08-26T17:47:19","slug":"english-police-renew-calls-to-lower-drink-driving-limit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.scramsystems.com\/blog\/2015\/06\/english-police-renew-calls-to-lower-drink-driving-limit\/","title":{"rendered":"English Police Renew Calls to Lower Drink Driving&#160;Limit"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Late last year, Scotland dropped its allowable level for drink driving to the equivalent of 0.05 BAC in the U.S., bringing Scotland\u2019s drink driving standards in line with those in most other European&#160;countries.<\/p>\n<p>Now, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/uknews\/law-and-order\/11614073\/Rank-and-file-police-call-for-drink-drive-limit-to-be-halved.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Police Federation of England and Wales<\/a> has echoed calls by officials and health leaders to follow Scotland\u2019s lead. One of the driving factors behind the Police Federation\u2019s position is\u00a0recent research that shows British women are drinking more and seem to be less influenced by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/women\/womens-life\/11614764\/Woman-drink-driver-I-moved-my-car-after-a-party.-It-ruined-my-life.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">anti-drink driving messages<\/a>. Women now make up 17% of convictions for driving while intoxicated, compared to just 9% in 1998. In contrast, the drink driving rate for men fell by nearly half during the same&#160;period.<\/p>\n<p>Issues related to alcohol misuse and abuse cost the U.K. billions of pounds each year, and the push to lower the drink driving limit is being seen as part of the country\u2019s larger efforts to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scramsystems.com\/scram-international\/gb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reduce alcohol-related crime<\/a>. But critics of the move claim that lowering the BAC limit for driving will only penalize responsible drinkers and does not address the real problem: individuals who get dangerously intoxicated before getting behind the&#160;wheel.<\/p>\n<p>If England and Wales change their drink driving standards, the U.S. will be one of the last Western nations\u00a0to allow a higher BAC for drivers.
