Binge drinking is considered\u00a0five or more drinks for a man or four or more for a woman on any one&#160;occasion.<\/p>\n<p>By comparing alcohol tax data for all 50 states with data from the Behavior Risk Factor Surveillance System surveys between 2000 and 2010, researchers with the Boston University School of Public Health found that a 1% increase in prices due to taxes equated to a 1.4% decline in binge drinking. The researchers also speculated that additional\u00a0studies could draw a stronger connection\u00a0between higher\u00a0taxes and <a href=\"http:\/\/scramsystems.com\/blog\/2014\/12\/nhtsa-releases-2013-drunk-driving-statistics\/#.VT_ClaPnaUk\">lower rates of drunk driving<\/a> and alcohol-related&#160;violence.<\/p>\n<p>Many U.S. states have upped taxes on alcohol in recent years. According to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.taxpolicycenter.org\/taxfacts\/displayafact.cfm?Docid=349\" target=\"_blank\">Tax Policy Center<\/a>, the median alcohol tax per gallon in the U.S.\u00a0is $0.20 for beer, $0.72 for wine, and $3.75 for spirits. Of the three categories, <a href=\"http:\/\/taxfoundation.org\/blog\/map-spirits-excise-tax-rates-state-2014\" target=\"_blank\">taxes for spirits vary the most widely<\/a>. For example, Virginia\u2019s excise tax per gallon of liquor is $19.19, compared to just $1.87 in neighboring West&#160;Virginia.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3848\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3848\" style=\"width: 588px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scramsystems.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Alcohol-taxes2-1024x814.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3848\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scramsystems.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Alcohol-taxes2-1024x814-1024x814.jpg\" alt=\"State Spirits Excise Tax Rates\" width=\"588\" height=\"467\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3848\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Click image to enlarge<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.usnews.com\/opinion\/articles\/2013\/09\/18\/alcohol-sin-taxes-are-bad-for-consumers-and-state-budgets\" target=\"_blank\">Opponents of alcohol excise taxes<\/a> often refer to them as a \u201csin tax\u201d and argue higher prices place a heavier burden on responsible drinkers. Critics also note that studies like this one show a correlation rather than a direct cause-and-effect link between taxes and alcohol consumption. There is also conflicting\u00a0opinions about whether higher prices\u00a0influence the choices of hardcore and underage drinkers\u2014two groups that are prone to binge&#160;drinking.<\/p>\n<p>However, binge drinking is blamed for more than 45,000 alcohol-related deaths in the U.S. last year, and the CDC estimates that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/alcohol\/fact-sheets\/binge-drinking.htm\" target=\"_blank\">1 in 6 adults binge drink<\/a>.
