Speech Analysis Could Outsmart Drunk&#160;Drivers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Computer scientists at Queens College and Columbia University have developed software to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/sciencetech\/article-2860630\/Forget-breathalysers-VOICE-stop-drink-driving-Software-detects-slurring-speech-embedded-cars-immobilise-them.html\" target=\"_blank\">identify if someone is drunk based on their speech<\/a>. They believe someday the technology could be added to cars to keep people from driving while under the influence of&#160;alcohol.<\/p>\n<h3>Library of Drunken&#160;Speech<\/h3>\n<p>The software is based on the work of researchers in Germany. Over a two-year period the researchers collected data from 162 participants in various states of drunkenness. They identified speech patterns often associated with intoxication, such as stammering, stuttering, and&#160;slurring.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. scientists believe their software could be\u00a0used as a preventative measure to keep a car from starting if it determines a driver is impaired. However, they acknowledge the technology is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/3038889\/difficult-conversations\/inside-the-first-audio-library-of-alcohol-addled-speech-which-just-m\" target=\"_blank\">several years away from practical use<\/a>\u2014in its current state the software correctly identifies a driver\u2019s drunkenness or sobriety less than 75% of the&#160;time.<\/p>\n<h3>Using Technology to\u00a0Stop Drunk&#160;Driving<\/h3>\n<p>The drunken speech software is another component in the trend to use in-vehicle technology to outwit would-be drunk drivers. All 50 states have laws that require <a href=\"\/blog\/2014\/07\/government-accountability-office-reviews-ignition-interlock-installation-rates\/\">ignition interlock devices<\/a> for some DUI offenders. And in 2015, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) starts the third phase of research on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nhtsa.gov\/Vehicle+Safety\/DADSS\" target=\"_blank\">Driver Alcohol Detection System for Safety (DADSS)<\/a> in hopes of developing passive, non-invasive alcohol detection sensors that could be added to all&#160;cars.<\/p>\n<p>While <a href=\"http:\/\/scramsystems.com\/blog\/2014\/12\/nhtsa-releases-2013-drunk-driving-statistics\/\">NHTSA statistics for 2013<\/a> show that\u00a0the\u00a0numbers are once again decreasing,\u00a0annual deaths from alcohol-related crashes still top 10,000.
