{"id":3413,"date":"2014-08-19T20:45:27","date_gmt":"2014-08-20T02:45:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/scramsystems.com\/blog\/?p=3413"},"modified":"2021-08-26T11:52:17","modified_gmt":"2021-08-26T17:52:17","slug":"colorado-tries-free-parking-rides-stop-drunk-driving","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.scramsystems.com\/blog\/2014\/08\/colorado-tries-free-parking-rides-stop-drunk-driving\/","title":{"rendered":"Colorado Tries Free Parking and Rides to Stop Drunk&#160;Driving"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>According to the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT), more than 26,000 Coloradans are arrested for DUI and over 150 people are killed in alcohol-related crashes each&#160;year.<\/p>\n<p>In an effort to combat drunk driving, on the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/events\/370353916445901\/?context=create&amp;source=49\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">last Fridays in August CDOT<\/a> is\u00a0offering \u201cLast\u00a0Call Lots\u201d near some of downtown Denver\u2019s most popular watering holes. The innovative program provides drivers with free parking and a voucher for a <a href=\"http:\/\/scramsystems.com\/blog\/2014\/07\/ridesharing-cure-drunk-driving\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sober ride home with Lyft<\/a>. Drivers must return to pick up their cars by 10:00 the next morning. The hope is that drivers will choose a safe ride and saving a few bucks over a booze-fuelled trip down the&#160;highway.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"CDOT Last Call Lots: High Five\" width=\"1140\" height=\"641\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/kC5EV0LT_V0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\"&#160;allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>While results of the \u201cLast\u00a0Call Lots\u201d experiment won\u2019t be known for some time, the proposal is getting surprisingly mixed responses from the&#160;public.<\/p>\n<h4>&#8220;Free&#8221;\u00a0Can Be&#160;Persuasive<\/h4>\n<p>Those in favor of the plan think it will provide Friday-night partiers an attractive alternative to driving intoxicated. The free lot may also catch the attention of drivers who started their night with no clear plan for how to get home safely. And many supporters have argued that anything that could reduce drunk driving is worth a&#160;try.<\/p>\n<p>But naysayers are raising some interesting points and concerns. Arguably, the free parking could encourage people to drive downtown rather than take a cab or public transit&#160;<em>both<\/em> ways. That is problematic because <a href=\"http:\/\/news.health.com\/2013\/09\/12\/peoples-beliefs-on-drunk-driving-may-change-when-theyre-drunk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">research released last fall<\/a> in <em>Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research&#160;<\/em>shows that people become less resistive to drunk driving the drunker they become. Drivers who may have planned to use the free lot and ride may make a different choice once they\u2019ve had a few, especially if they decide they don\u2019t want the hassle of\u00a0picking up\u00a0their car the next&#160;morning.<\/p>\n<h4>Just Postponing the&#160;Problem?<\/h4>\n<p>And speaking of the next morning, CDOT\u2019s 10 a.m. deadline for drivers to retrieve their cars may have unintended consequences by putting <a href=\"http:\/\/scramsystems.com\/blog\/2013\/12\/morning-hungover-driving-still-impaired-driving\/#.U_J0RKPnaUl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u201cstill drunk\u201d and hung-over drivers<\/a> on the road. Many people do not know how long it takes alcohol to leave the body, meaning drinkers who would never get behind the wheel after leaving the bar may still be too drunk to drive the next morning\u2014without realizing&#160;it.<\/p>\n<p>Research has also found that getting behind the wheel while hung over\u2014even after the alcohol has left your system\u2014can have some of the same effects as driving while intoxicated. In short, critics argue the plan may not solve the problem of impaired driving so much as simply push it down the road a few&#160;hours.<\/p>\n<p>Is CDOT\u2019s idea worth a try or are the potential issues too great?
