At that time, approximately 25,000 people were losing their lives each year due to\u00a0drunk&#160;driving.<\/p>\n<p>Now, 30 years later, \u201c3D\u201d week has transformed into National Impaired Driving Prevention Month. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/the-press-office\/2012\/11\/30\/presidential-proclamation-national-impaired-driving-prevention-month-201\" target=\"_blank\">President Obama has shown continued support<\/a>\u00a0at the federal level for the fight against drunk and drugged driving&#160;by.<\/p>\n<p>Today, there are over <a href=\"http:\/\/www-fars.nhtsa.dot.gov\/Main\/reportslinks.aspx\">10,000 people a year<\/a> killed each year by drunk drivers.\u00a0 It\u2019s far fewer than in 1982, but a number of other metrics remain virtually unchanged. Nearly 1.4 million are arrested for DUI each year.\u00a0 Over 15 percent of people on probation in the U.S. are there for drunk driving. While the progress is substantial, it\u2019s still an&#160;epidemic.<\/p>\n<p>This month, in honor of National Impaired Driving Prevention Month, <em>Sobering&#160;Up<\/em> will take a look back at 2012 and highlight the top 12 developments in the fight against Impaired Driving.
