Or vice versa: your teen\u2019s friends might be listening to you, IF you have the proper parenting&#160;style.<\/p>\n<p>A new study published in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scramsystems.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/archpediatrics-2012-1372.pdf\">Archives of Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine<\/a>, conducted by UC-San Diego and Harvard Medical School researchers, shows that kids are influenced positively by their friends\u2019 moms to not drink or do drugs, especially when their friends\u2019 Moms have an \u201cauthoritative\u201d style of&#160;parenting.<\/p>\n<p>What is an authoritative style of parenting? According to the study\u2019s authors, there are four types of parenting styles based on the categories of parental control (how much a parent intervenes in their child\u2019s life) and parental warmth (how \u201cpositive affect\u201d a parent shows for their&#160;child).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Results from the study indicate that even if a teen does not have an authoritative parent themselves, if they are connected to an authoritative parent via their friends, they are less likely to be involved in substance abuse.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Data collected from over 90,000 participants show that if a teen has a friend with an authoritative mother, that teen was:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>40% less likely to drink to the point of&#160;drunkenness<\/li>\n<li>38% less likely to binge&#160;drink<\/li>\n<li>39% less likely to smoke&#160;cigarettes<\/li>\n<li>43% less likely to use&#160;marijuana<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>than a teen whose friend\u2019s mother was \u201cneglectful.\u201d Additionally, the study indicates that teens who observe their friends\u2019 parents interacting positively with their teen might benefit directly from those observations, as well as receiving mentoring benefits in the long-term from their friends\u2019&#160;parents.<\/p>\n<p>What do you think of this study?
